Estate Planning Roadblocks

Why We Run the Other Way

Estate planning is one of those things that is hard to get motivated about — it sounds about as fun as getting a dentist appointment! However, it is an essential service that every person, family, and business owner needs. It’s the only way we can protect our loved ones and our hard-earned money once we are gone — whether you have $5,000 or $5 million.

Here are some typical reasons why people “run the other way” from getting their estate plan setup.

1.     Who Wants to Talk About Death?!

When you are young and healthy, talking about death, dying, and illness seems like a distant future. Talking about money, family, or choosing executors of your estate are also uncomfortable topics to think about and discuss.

This is normal! But we can’t let a few minutes of making uncomfortable decisions stop us from taking care of our loved ones and our estate.

2.     I’m TOO BUSY to do this right now!

Friend, we are all too busy! Life is always in a constant state of too-much-to-do! We get that! But there is never going to be a better time. The best way to approach it is to just get it on the calendar. Make an appointment! If when the time comes you need to reschedule, that is ok! But put it in your schedule so that it is there on your mind.

3.     It’s too much to process.

Will or Trust? Who will take care of your kids? Who will serve as your healthcare POA?

This is a LOT to take in! Talking about family details, finances, and analyzing the law is a lot for anyone to wrap their mind around all at once.

As an estate planning attorney, it is our job to break this information down and help translate complex legal concepts for you to make sure you have a solid understanding of what you are signing.
