How to Prepare for Vacation

Things to consider before leaving on vacation

Is it May already?! With only a few weeks left of school, many of you have probably already started planning your summer vacation plans! Cruises, flights, beach stays, national parks, romantic getaways – so many fun adventures ahead!

But before you zip off to your dream vacation, here are some things that you need to consider .

  1. Do you have an estate plan in place?

You didn't realize you needed an estate plan for your vacation?!

Well, technically you don’t.

But here is why you should have one: while fun and adventure awaits, it’s always smart to play it safe. Take some time to figure out what you would want to happen if something were to happen to you.

2. Can someone manage your financial affairs if you cannot?

That trip to Europe sounded so amazing - but now that it's coming time to leave, do you have someone in place to help take care of any financial matters that may come up? You may need a financial power of attorney during the time that you are gone just in case any issues arise. Check out our post HERE for information on how you can set limits to a power of attorney.

3. How will you manage your health while you are away?

Even the healthiest person can develop a health problem while traveling. In the event that something happens to you, it's smart to have a medical power of attorney in place to make decisions according to your wishes.

4. Will your insurance cover you if you are overseas?

It's also a good idea to make sure your health insurance will cover you while you're abroad. They frequently only cover you while you are in the United States, so you may need to look for a short-term policy while overseas.

Do you need travel insurance? If you are traveling internationally you may want to consider travel insurance. If you are traveling internationally, you should think about getting travel insurance. In an emergency, it could save you a ton money.

5. Are your minor kids taken care of?

Are you planning a romantic getaway without the kids? What if your son breaks an arm while riding his bike with grandma and she is unable to get a hold of you while at the hospital? Granting her (or whomever will watch your children) medical care is the only way to ensure that quick decisions can be made while you are gone. Each state has a different way to grant medical care on a temporary basis, so make sure you have the correct documentation to prevent any issues.

Relax and Enjoy

Now that you've considered all of these possibilities, you can sit back and and rest easy on your vacation knowing that no matter what happens - you are covered!
